A graduate of Mechanical engineering from University of Ilorin designed a Battery powered Ventilator, in an exclusive interview by Satcommedia with Umar Abdulsalam
In the interview he said “This is a design of a battery powered ventilator that I believe will help in the war against COVID-19. Although there are multiple other prospective designs for ventilators that are much more complex, I deliberately made it relatively less complex.
This is because I don’t intend for this ventilator to be used as a permanent solution, but rather a back-up and/or temporary ventilator
As is well known in countries like Nigeria, power outages are a common feature. In the event of a power outage, this device will be used as a temporary ventilator for the patient so that permanent damage won’t be caused to the patient in such a situation.
Furthermore, those device can be pivoted to serve a more common and longlasting problem. Manual ventilators are mostly used on patients when they are being transported from a place to the hospital via an ambulance. I think if this ventilator is fitted into every ambulance, it would reduce the risk of the patient running out of oxygen due to the fatigue of the person operating the manual ventilator.
Although high end ambulances, especially in first world countries, are fitted with high end ventilators, ambulances in relatively less financially capable hospitals or developing countries cannot afford such a solution. This would be a good replacement for said highend ventilators.” He concluded.
