Since several millenniums ago, the society has successfully broken the human race into two factions- The superiors and the subordinates. This division cuts across every ramification, ranging from issues relating to wealth and power to that relating to gender. It takes no genius to know that women are those who have been been bracketed under the umbrella of subordination.
History tells of the series of oppressions and inequalities faced by women in many spheres of life, part of the most shocking details involving war rape of women and their classification as worldly materials to be acquired and/or inherited as properties. All these acts have consciously or unconsciously helped in reinforcing the phenomenon of patriarchy .
However, to a large extent, times have changed and in the present era, the label of subordination placed on women several centuries ago has began to diminish significantly. But amidst such cultural and social change, a substantial amount of individuals in the world still hold on to the archaic ideology of the past , viewing and treating women as inferior humans, hence subjecting them to shame, ridicule and abuse in very many ways, domestic violence being the most prevalent and has thus attracted the attention of several local and international humanitarian organizations.
With specific reference to the Nigerian society, although domestic violence takes many folds, the most famous dimension involves the physical battery of females by their male counterparts- which could be their brother(s) (or any other male relative), husbands or lovers.
Being a very sensitive issue, not just in this part of the world, many victims refuse to speak out and seek for help. Instead, they keep ‘enduring’ the inhumane treatments, hoping it will come to an end one day. But at the long run in most cases, the violence and abuse does not cease, lasting until the victims eventually die of physical torture.
Pertinent is to state that there have been reports from men who claim to experience physical abuse and violence from their female partners. However, globally, the larger percentage of people on the receiving end of domestic violence and abuse are females.
It must be noted that there is no compulsion in any form of relationship (friendship, courtship, marriage, etc.). If the issues being experienced in any form of relationship becomes unbearable and communication doesn’t seem to be capable of resolving the problems at hand, instead of resorting to violence and abuse, it is best to just back out of such a relationship, regardless!
Violence is never the answer, never has and never will be. Lil Frosh’s actions should be condemned rather than justified by statements like “He is just a young boy, he didn’t know what he was doing”.
Davido’s decision to fire him from the record label for such pessimistic behaviour is heroic and commendable, the society needs more people who will shun domestic violence in all its totality.
Finally, it takes a great deal of courage to experience a tragic incidence but an even greater courage to speak up about it. The world stands by you- Gift Camille. Stay strong!
