LEAGUE ONE AND LEAGUE TWO SEASONS OVER AFTER CLUBS VOTE TO END CAMPAIGNS

The 2019/20 League One and League Two football seasons are officially over after a majority of clubs in both divisions voted to end the campaigns early.

After weeks of meetings, the EFL has confirmed that clubs in both of the 2 divisions have voted in favour of an early conclusion to the season, and that final tables will be decided using an unweighted points per game system.

The decision to use an unweighted PPG model to end prematurely completed seasons was ratified by a vote of EFL clubs earlier today (09/06), with late alternative suggestions by individual clubs rejected.

With the adopted method, League One’s finished table will see Coventry City and Rotherham United achieve automatic promotion to the Championship, while Tranmere Rovers, Southend United and Bolton Wanderers will be relegated to League Two.

The play-offs for the third promotion spot will go ahead, with Wycombe Wanderers, Oxford United, Portsmouth and Fleetwood Town contesting them.

Wycombe’s place is of some dispute, as the Chairboys had sat behind Peterborough but with one game in hand when football stopped in early March.

Peterborough were one of six clubs who had called for the season to continue in a statement released last month, but a majority has now pressed ahead with calls to end the season here and now.

Meanwhile, in League Two, Swindon Town, Crewe Alexandra and Plymouth Argyle will go up automatically to the third tier. Swindon have been declared champions as they had a game in hand on Crewe.

The play-offs will be contested by Cheltenham Town, Exeter City, Colchester United and Northampton Town.

While the league intends to press ahead with relegation from the division, it is not yet clear who will be going down to the National League. While Stevenage officially finished bottom, an FA charge that could potentially see a points deduction has been issued against Macclesfield Town.

The Silkmen have already had 11 points deducted this season for two separate charges, and were issued a third charge last week for failing to pay players and breaching an EFL order.

League 2’s play-offs will take place in full this month, but there is no confirmation yet for League 1’s play-offs or for a start date for the 2020-21 seasons in the two divisions.

The Premier League and Championship will return next week, with their schedule restarting with 2 games next Wednesday (17/06) followed by a full round of fixtures in both divisions the following weekend.
