Gov AbdulRazaq’s Aide Cautions Taaooma Over Misrepresentation of Ilorin Culture

Hon Ibraheem Abdulateef Akolu, the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Communication to the Kwara State Governor, has expressed concern over the portrayal of Ilorin culture in Ilorinborn Comedian, Maryam Apaokagi Taaooma’s comedy skits, particularly the character of Quadri. Abdulateef, a fan of Taaooma, praised her creativity and humor but noted that Quadri’s character often misrepresents the average Ilorin boy as saucy and disrespectful.

Abdulateef specifically cited the latest skit released on Thursday, where Quadri’s manner of addressing elders was deemed rude and antithetical to Ilorin’s cultural values. He emphasized the distinction between stubbornness and unculturedness, urging Taaooma to reconsider her portrayal of Ilorin culture to avoid perpetuating negative stereotypes.

Abdulateef warned that arts and films showcasing a particular culture or society can significantly influence how others perceive them, and that young people within the community may internalize and emulate the bad habits depicted in the skits. He appealed to Taaooma to ensure that her comedy does not compromise the values and dignity of the Ilorin people.
