Chiefs of Defence Staff from Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on Friday met in Abuja over the military coup in Niger Republic.
The defence chiefs called on the Niger’s coup leaders to immediately release deposed President Muhamed Bazoum and return the country to democratic governance, saying that such move is the only way to ensure peace in the country.
Our correspondent reports that the meeting of the defence chiefs came few hours to the end of seven-day ultimatum issued to Niger’s military to restore Bazoum presidency or risk being forced out.
ECOWAS chairman, President Bola Tinubu, had on Thursday wrote Nigeria’s Senate to convey the intention of regional body to deploy troops to Niger in order to oust the coup leaders from power.
This follows the failure of his special delegation to the West African country from securing any deal with the coupists on Thursday. The delegation consisted of former military head of state, Abdulsalami Abubakar and Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar.
Earlier on Friday, the Acting Comptroller General of Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adeniyi, stormed the Illela border in Sokoto State to ensure closure of all entry points against Niger Republic.
